I am Abigail

A testimony I wrote for our church "Purity Conference" July 28, 2011

Year 1981 22nd of November, a very precious gift was given to a Christian couple and they named her Abigail, a Hebrew name which means Father's joy. And that's me!  am so blessed to be raised in a home with strong Christian background. Church was like an extension of home. Sunday school, Vacation Bible School and church choir is a large part of my childhood. To top it all, I even went to Christian elementary school. My life seems so safe and Satan free. I enjoyed the innocence of the so called “first love” with a  school heartthrob and a wonderful friendship with my mom that I'll tell her everything about me.

Year 1993, high school was a challenge. I was finally out of my comfort zone. At this point of life I was exposed to a world I'm not so familiar with. I felt so alienated and struggled a lot. There's a list of dos and do nots I need to follow. Do not go there, do not watch that, do not say that, do not sing that and a whole lot of do nots. And honestly, I do not like them. It was tough to follow with my curiosity at it's peek. Instead of me being open to my parents especially my mom, I tend to keep things to myself out of fear particularly when I do the do nots.

I have number of crushes during HS but I promised myself not to have a boyfriend until I reach 18. I thought getting older means being smarter. I even prayed for my childhood crush and believed that he will be my future husband because God gave me "the signs". Then he had his girlfriend and that broke my heart. On my last year in college, I felt so tired waiting for my God's Best (that's what I used to call it). Instead of believing God's truth that He wants the best for me I chose to believe Satan's lie "Hey! don't you know God is withholding a good thing for you". That's when I tried to be in a no-label relationship with a friend, thinking it was harmless and that I'm just expanding my choices because it seems number of Christian boys are significantly small. Few months before graduation from college, my dad found out about it and I've seen how heartbroken he was for me. I knew I have to stop. After college I was left alone, full of guilt and with diminished confidence to myself.

Year 2003, with a college degree, a job and my clock ticking I got more impatient and proud. A co-worker was my first official boyfriend. Even with tons of differences and without parents approval, I convinced myself that he is the one. I compromised a “lot” just not to admit that I was wrong. I've done things I shouldn't do and gone to places I shouldn't go. I become an expert in pretending, I continue to serve God while enjoying the world. I felt so in control, like I have life switches that I can just turn on and off. It's like I'm living 2 lives and seriously it was so exhausting.

Year 2007, everything in my life seems to fall apart, relationship issues within family, my Mama diagnosed with breast cancer, my workplace shutting down, what else can happen? That same year before I move to my new workplace I've caught my boyfriend cheating on me. I was so crushed and confused. Because of my sins, I couldn't cry to God for help. It was easy for Satan to convince me that "Now that I've fallen, God has no use for me" Though I'm wounded and in pain I settle for the easiest escape, pretending like nothing happened. I thought I’ll be left with nothing if I leave. But without healing, my heart was hardened like stone. I can't trust, I can't forgive, lying even to myself seems a natural thing. I'm recklessly living my life seeking affirmation with wrong relationships like there's no hope for the future to the point of even asking "Does God really exists?"

Year 2009, after 13 long years I met a long lost friend. For good time’s sake we went out and talk, we tried to catch up on how our lives are doing. We met again few days before he left, then pops his very surprising question. "How's your spiritual life?" he asked. I was torn of telling him the ugly truth or telling him a lie, so I just simply answered "I'm still in church". Then he asked another question, "How's your love life?". It was strange that I can't keep secrets from him. Suddenly I was crying telling him my ugly truth. It was the first time I told anybody about all these secrets I've been keeping. And then he said to me, "I can’t leave without telling you these, you might not be the same Abigail I knew before but it doesn't change the fact that you are God's precious daughter". Flashback of my childhood came to my mind, the time when I was so fragile, so naïve, so deep in love with God and I cried more.

A psalm from the Bible clearly says
"The king is enthralled by your beauty; honor him, for he is you lord... all glorious is the princess within a chamber; her gown is interwoven with gold. In embroidered garments she is led to the king."

I heard like it was God himself telling me these words “You are beautiful”. “You are my delightful princess.”

For the longest time I forgot to believe these truth. How awesome to know my value in God's eyes. But at the same time it was also disheartening that I failed to conduct myself as such. That same night I talked to God. I felt so strange talking to him again like this. I repeatedly say that I miss Him, I love Him and that I'm so sorry for all my wrong doings. I can't stop thanking him for taking care of me even I failed him a lot. I was like a child crying and hugged by her father. It was a relief confessing that I am a mess of magnificent proportion and that I have God's wonderful forgiveness.

Finally, I made a personal decision to break all the ties that binds me to an impure and unworthy life. It was hard because I've hurt people in the process. It took a while for other people to understand, even my own family. I was even judged by others. It's only by God's grace I made it through.

Year 2010 30th of June, I made these covenant to God and to the school heartthrob, my long lost friend, my husband Victor

And I promise to be true to you,
to live a life in purity as unto you
Waiting for the day till I hear you say
Here is the one I have created just for you

Just like what Dannah Gresh wrote in her book "Bride Wore White", purity is a process. Satan will always be there to tempt me and even use of my ugly past to lie. Please pray that God will strengthen me to keep my covenant with Him. And if I fail, that I will always remember that I am Abigail, my Father's joy and I am precious in His sight.

Jesus the Word

John 1:1 ...In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the word was God.

The world was created by the spoken word of God. God "spoke" the world and everything in it into existence. This is what John wrote about Jesus, that through Jesus all things were made, without Jesus there's no life. Jesus the word is God's revelation of themeselves to us humans. John expressed the reality that Jesus was fully and completely one true God who made dwelling among us.

Honestly, this is one of the most confusing verse in the Bible in my limited logical mind. Jesus himself said "we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things?" Jesus understands our "difficulty of acceptance". That's why he asked everyone to believe him and have understanding because he knows what he's talking about. He knows of  heavenly things because he came from heaven.

I learned what power God's word have, what reverence God's word deserves. It's embarassing to say but I don't think I see reading God's word like that, I don't think I know Jesus like that. My desire is that I may come to  know Jesus  more and more, that I may read God's word more and more. Please pray that I can faithfully read God's word everyday. Life struggles seems to threw me off track. But I know God's word, my Jesus has the power to let me overcome.

ACTS

As a work-at-home mom I struggled a lot making time for a lot of things, sometimes even time to pee is nowhere to be found and I know it's only by God's grace that I finished reading this book. Life is hard and let's be honest Christian life is harder. It's full of suffering. Through our study I learned that suffering is an inherent identity of Christ which means as a follower of Christ, suffering is a way of life. But it's not all about suffering... Christ did suffer AND (with emphasis in the AND) rise from the dead. Sometimes it's so easy to dwell on the suffering and forget the "AND" part... Jesus' resurrection. Acts 1:3 says, after his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proof that he was alive. Which means we have hope of having our sins forgiven, being made right in God's sight, and having eternal life through Christ. Few verse after, Jesus asked them to wait for the gift his Father has promised. How gracious the Father is? After giving His one and only Son to suffer and die for our sins, now He promised the gift of the Holy Spirit. And this Holy Spirit is not an ordinary gift, it comes with power to perform miracles signs and wonders. I still can't fully grasp the power that comes with this gift but the book of Acts tells me to expect it and not be surprised. I always associate repentance with forgiveness but Acts taught me that it also preludes the receipt of the Holy Spirit.

One thing that really stick to me in our study of Acts is consistency. Apostle Paul knows that we must go through hardships to enter the kingdom of God as he mentioned in Acts 14:22. still he consistently preach the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ. His behavior towards sharing the gospel is not dependent if people are welcoming or not, if people receives or rejects his message, if his in prison or out of prison, if he travels near or far or his life is safe or is in danger... he continually explained and declared the kingdom of God. He's consistent with the Lord's command to bring salvations to the ends of the earth. Consistency is a little easier when everything is well but with suffering involve I think it's a whole different story but God is telling me through the life of Paul that consistency is possible.

My prayer is to be consistent in my walk of faith, like Apostle Paul. I pray that my Bible reading won't be dependent on how tired I am on certain days or my prayer life won't be dependent on the mood I have for the day or my Tuesday Meeting attendance won't be dependent on my weekly stress level or my engagement won't be dependent on how much effort I need to put in. I pray that every time suffering/hardship comes, that my first response will always be to look up to God in prayer instead of complaining. I pray to be confident of the power of the Holy Spirit to fill my inadequacy in sharing the Gospel.

Praise you Jesus for you are holy and righteous. Praise you for you're suffering to save us from our sins and thank God that you understand.

Walk to Emmaus

Emmaus, a village seven miles from Jerusalem,
Jesus joined two men walking but they weren’t able to recognize him

Mid their conversation He asked them "what is it you’re discussing?"
With sad face, one replied "Hey! You don't know what happened?"

Man of God, a prophet, dynamic in work and word was Jesus of Nazarene they said
But he was betrayed, sentenced to death, and crucified;
The One they hoped would deliver Israel

And it’s been three days; news that he was alive completely confused them
“Foolish! Slow-hearted! All those things had to happen", Jesus explained to them

Upon reaching the edge of the village, to their supper Jesus was invited
He took, blessed, broke the bread and gave it to them and their eyes were opened

Scriptures, Jesus pointed out everything in the Scriptures
Once opened up can put a man's heart on fire

X.XV.MMXV

Anak,

Today is one of the scariest, saddest and most painful day we went through. We had no chance to have a glimpse of you again. We never had the chance to hear your heartbeat. Our lives will forever change. In spite everything, thank God for this short but memorable time we had as a family... Mama, Papa, and you. Papa and Mama loves you Anak. We miss you already.

Life of Abraham

At Haran is where your story started
God said He'll make you great nation, go and you'll be blessed
Because of fear you told Pharaoh Sarah was your sister
God inflected serious disease to get you out of your distress
Resolving a quarrel, you and Lot separated
God said your offspring will be as many as dust can be counted
After rescuing Lot, you won war after war
God promised He's your shield and your very great reward
Hagar bore you Ishmael and Sarah bore you Issac
God asked you to let go of one and sacrifice the other
And you live a good old age of one hundred and seventy five
God blessed you, your son Isaac and his generations to come
Many things from your story I could learn
One that's most obvious, in your life God's always in the picture

Araw-araw ika'y nasa aking isip

Di gustong mabuhay ng may panghihinayang
Ika'y maging ina sino may ipagyayabang

Alam kong ako'y handa maging ina balang araw

I thank God

I thank God for birthdays to celebrate life.
I thank Him for a new member of the Austria family, Calix Johan. I also thank Him for giving my mom another year of life. I thank Him for loving me unconditionally for 32 years.

I thank God for family whose always there no matter what.
I thank Him for my Papa and Mama whom I appreciated more when I left the Philippines few years ago. I thank God for giving me a chance to enjoy them in the past few months. It may not be the perfect situation but memories to be treasured and remembered.

I thank God for my dear husband Victor whom I'm sharing this special thing called marriage.
I know we're a work in progress but I thank God that we both love Him. For better or for worst, till death do us part.

I thank God for friends that I could always count on. I thank Him for giving them a heart to care and help me and my family.

I thank God for our home.
I thank Him for providing our every need and allowing our home to be a blessing for people who comes and go. Especially the members of the basement band.

I thank God for church.
I thank him for letting me experience love of Jesus through their prayers and support.

I thank God for music.
I thank Him that I can sing to Him until my throat gives up. I thank Him for letting me practice for a future jamming "up" there.

I thank God for all our prayer warriors on our way home to the Philippines.
I thank him for letting me experience the power of prayer. No typhoon, no illness, no fear can stop Him from granting my mom's prayer to be home.

I thank God for a means to get connected with family and friends though we're continents apart.
I thank Him for Facebook and Skype.

I thank God that no matter how uncertain the future maybe, there's one thing I'm certain of.
Nothing can separate me from the love of God through Jesus Christ.

I thank God for the hope I have in suffering.
A hope that does not put me to shame because He poured His love in my heart.

I thank God for He is who He is.
He is good. He is just. He is in control. He is faithful. He is always there even when pain numbs me to feel it. He's my unlimited source of strength, my Jehovah-jireh, my Savior and my friend.

I know a day not even a lifetime would be enough to give him thanks for everything He has done for me but I want to thank Him for today.

Yakap

nakapagpapatahan ng lumuluha o kaya'y nagtatampo
nakakapagpasaya ng taong nalulungkot
nakapagpapakalma ng sinumang natatakot
ipinadarama sa taong mahalaga sa iyo
pinananabikan mula sa taong mahal mo

Koalaing

Koalaing is the act of wrapping your legs around someone like a koala would hug a tree. Especially while cuddling.

Nanay Esther

Nanay yan ang tawag ko sa iyo
Di man ako tunay na anak mo

She Survived

I just got home from work, mom's watching TV and suddenly asked me "Pwede ko ba gamitin yung Medicard para ipa-check yung bukol sa dibdib ko?". In a week my mom was diagnosed with Breast Cancer Stage 2B and scheduled for a unilateral mastectomy. My dad couldn't walk home when he got the lab result.

It was hard to see her go through this. I hate the thought of loosing her but who am I to question God why these things happens.

It's been five years since... SHE SURVIVED! Everyday I'll thank God for her life... everyday I'll be inspired of what a strong woman she has become.

I love you so much MAMA!

Paalam Mang Pidol

Cherry Knot

I remember being challenged by a friend to tie a cherry knot with my mouth. What's with it? I don't know.

To answer the question, here's what wiki has to say:
• Your talented and know how to use your tongue. Other than that doesn't mean much.
• Some people say that you are a good kisser if you can do it fast. but some people dont agree!
• There is no evidence to support that being able to tie a cherry stem with your tongue means you're talented or a good kisser. It just means that your tongue, which is a muscle, is strong. It means you are blessed with dexterity.
• Also tying a cherry stem into a knot with your tongue is classified as an afrodisiac.

Kapag ika'y naiisip at ika'y nais mayapos
